"The requested device registry key does not exist" when installing new USB devices.
Hi there, Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. I've tried to document it as well as I can so here goes: A couple weeks ago I went to plug in a friends USB stick and received the following message "The requested device registry key does not exist" and the USB stick would not work. I didn't think anything of it because it was a USB3 stick and I know USB3 has some problems that still need to be worked out. Now today I went to plug in a new Logitech mouse and after installing the software for it and received this error again. Now after checking with other devices, it seems any new USB devices I plug in will not work! Only my existing mouse, cell phone, and three USB sticks seem to be working as well as the fingerprint reader and webcam. My system is a Lenovo W520 that is not even 6 months old. I contacted Lenovo for support and they said any registry related errors mean they will just reload the system. I'm a university student in the middle of the semester and I use this computer for school, my job, and my finances. I absolutely can't afford to reload the OS right now as I have an enormous amount of stuff installed on it. System Restore doesn't have any Restore Points that are far enough back to correct this issue because I don't even remember the last time I plugged a new USB device into the computer. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Some more information Upon first inserting a new USB stick I get the following This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) The requested device registry key does not exist. Then after clicking update drivers I get a different code. The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) The requested device registry key does not exist. Interestingly for some peripherals such as my new mouse. I get no errors just a message saying: No drivers are installed for this device.

Hi, You could uninstall the all USB devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and reboot the machine to check the result: 1. Open a privileged command prompt. 2. Type the following command: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 cd %SystemRoot%\System32 start devmgmt.msc 3. Uninstall the all USB devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Additional, you could install the following tool to check how it works: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 Alex ZhaoPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Alex, I followed the steps you gave me and I still have three unknown devices and my new mouse still does not work when I plug it in. The error is still: This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) The requested device registry key does not exist. Sorry it took so long to reply. I had just given up on the mouse as I'm in the middle of the semester at university. Finally what would the benefit of the System Readiness Tool be? I already know this system is ready for Windows 7 as it came pre-installed with it and was working fine up until a month or so ago. Thanks, Kevin

No errors detected by System Readiness Tool... I looked in the setupapi.dev.log and found several of the error messages. If this could help I can post them here. They all appear to be related to USB3 yet none of my USB ports allow installation of new devices.

Following the advice on another forum. I rebooted in Selective startup and deinstalled all of the USB drivers then rebooted with the mouse plugged in and it now works only when plugged into the USB port it was in when it first got installed. I still have three unknown devices USB\ROOT_HUB20&VID8086&PID1C26&REV0004 - Location: on Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller USB\VID_8087&PID_0024&REV_0000 - Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0001 USB\VID_8087&PID_0024&REV_0000 - Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0001

Just did that and it didn't seem to do anything. Upon reboot the same devices are showing as Unknown and Working properly. My mouse still shows No drivers are installed for this device when plugged into any port other than the port I have it working on. Of course when I go and plug it into that port it says the install failed but that the device is working correctly.
